Slow-going Perl

IE vs NN4. SSI

  • Read up more on how to track down why IE6 suddenly broke.
  • Trying to decide how I want to do SSI in my Perl.
    • http://cpan.uwinnipeg.ca/dist/CGI-SSI looks good, but overkill
    • Gonna check out http://www.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_include.html
  • Ack. I was looking at what it would take to do a quick-n-dirty file import. But the syntax of Perl is so terse that it's not obvious what's going on. I recognize bits and pieces, like I can see where they do the actual template substitution. I see the old TECO s/xxx/yyy/ substitution syntax. But it's not obvious how I stick my own text into the existing string. There seems to be a lot of implied stuff going on, about what string they're currently working on. I see where they read in the template file, but not how the substitution is being done on the variable holding the string they just read into.
  • Found some primers on Perl. The code I'm trying to change still doesn't make sense, but I'm making progress.

Form-ing knowledge

  • Looks like the form action has to go to a cgi program. I'm toying with the idea of seeing what it would take to have an intermediary script that redirects to my page with the embedded script. My guess is that won't work.
  • Maybe it would be better to implement my own SSI?
  • Found a couple of SSI-in-Perl examples, but it's unclear how hard it will be to use them on my website

Fighting IE

  • Got a response back about my IE margins. Turns out it's just a bug in IE. Part of his suggested fix breaks NN4. Not totally. Removing "position: absolute;" on the logodiv causes the logo to shift down, which makes the buttons on top of it look bad. He said he had another approach in mind that might work

POSTing things

  • Finishing splitting up pdfcreation and desktoppublishing.
  • Tried green for the menu colors. Don't like it, but putting it up so dad can look at it
  • Doing a little more Foundations
  • Grr, just lost a lot of stuff I typed here
  • Interesting browser tricks and demos slayeroffice
  • I just noticed that IE6 was ignoring the top margin of the content area. I'm 99% sure this used to work. Posted a question
  • Reading newsgroups
  • Uploaded latest
  • Checked everything in
  • Looking at how to show the menu when looking at user data.
  • Hmm, won't let me POST to signin.html. Guess I need to read up on forms. I bet there's a way to get that info to the cgi script
